Rosemont Journal Article, July 16, 2025:
The Donald E. Stephens Convention Center just got a major HVAC upgrade with 12 new high efficiency heating, ventilating and air conditioning roof top units. Delivered and installed via helicopter airlift, they are designed to use less energy and deliver more consistent comfort, these units are a big step forward in their sustainability journey. Consumers, vendors, and other participants in shows and conferences at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center will also have an easier time connecting with the outside world through an improved Wi-Fi system.
Rosemont Village Board members Monday approved hiring the company Boingo to perform the upgrades at a cost of $214,700. The work, some of which has already been completed, calls for installing cables and other equipment in ceiling areas of the million square foot facility will be able to get better signals, especially in crowded areas, and added coverage.
According to convention center Executive Director Chris Stephens, the upgrade was prompted by a request for a better Wi-Fi in the center by representatives of the National Sports Collectors Convention. Stephens said that organizers precut that attendance at the show, July 30-Aug. 3, will be held on 600,000 sq. ft. of floor space and include autograph opportunities of Hall of Fame baseball players, sports trading cards, and a variety of sports-related sales and opportunities.
“This will provide a lot of added coverage” added Stephens. Attendance at the show could exceed 100,000.
